The Quiet Epidemic, an award-winning exposé about the controversy surrounding Lyme disease, is coming to Monroeville for a free event on Thursday, May 30 at 6:00 PM at the Monroeville Senior Center (125 S 2nd St, Philadelphia, PA 19106). The screening, which is free to attend with an RSVP, will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Dr Linda D’Eramo, DO, Dr Shannon Smith, DC, Jeff Covelli RPh and PA Lyme’s Bill Moore. About The Quiet Epidemic: After years of living with mysterious symptoms, a young girl from Brooklyn and a Duke University scientist are diagnosed with a disease said to not exist: Chronic Lyme disease. The Quiet Epidemic follows their search for answers, which lands them in the middle of a medical controversy. What begins as a patient story evolves into an investigation into the history of Lyme disease, dating back to its discovery in 1975. The film premiered at the prestigious Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto in Spring 2022, where it was voted into the Top 20 out of 200+ films. It has since been featured in 20 additional festivals (including Hamptons Int’l Film Festival, DOC NYC, Woodstock Film Festival, Mill Valley Film Festival) and has won five festival awards. The Quiet Epidemic qualified for the 2022 Academy Awards and had a successful limited theatrical run in early 2023.

About Lyme Disease in Pennsylvania: For 11 of the past 13 years, Pennsylvania has been the worst state for new cases of Lyme Disease, of which approximately 25% are children.  Lyme disease has been confirmed in all 67 Pennsylvania counties, along with many tick-borne co-infections including:  Bartonella, Babesiosis, Borrelia miyamotoi, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain-Spotted Fever, and Mycoplasmosis. Tick Research Labs reports 36% of ticks in PA carry Lyme disease, 55% carry at least one pathogen. 

PA Lyme Resource Network (www.palyme.org) is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides education, patient advocacy, support and resources to help others navigate Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases in the state of Pennsylvania. The state-wide group, founded in 2012 by individuals with personal experiences with the diseases, provides education in the form of speakers, seminars, patient networks, and research updates for the general public, medical professionals, schools, private businesses, and government entities. It also supports regional and independent Lyme groups across the state that hold local meetings to provide support, education, and resources to their local communities.
